System Workbench for STM32 failed to run on Mac OS X

Hi Julien,
As a matter of fact I installed yesterday the new SW because at start up, my previous working version asked me to do so. I did some upgrades and after that my Mac os( high sierra) crashed. So I had no other choice left than to follow the advice on the message box. Any way I reinstalled the new java 8u152 and downloaded the new SW (which should have the embedded JRE). Changes in eclipse.ini, didn't help as the SW still wouldn't start, complaining of not finding a JRE. Then I saw your post, understanding that I shouldn't change anything at all, correct? and the Info.plist says clearly only uncomment if you don't want to use the embedded JRE... But it still cannot find the JRE, and SW won't start... What now???
Can someone help???

Hi Francisco,

The JRE is part of the full installer, it is not downloaded by the upgrade mecanism.
To make my own test I just installed SW on my Macbook (El Capitan 10.11.6) from the 2.3 installer picked there:

All is working like a charm, the embedded JRE is successfully in use. As visible in the Installation Details > Configuration tab:

/Users/me/Applications/SystemWorkbench.app/Contents/MacOS/jre/Contents/Home/lib/jli/libjli.dylib

I didn't change any configuration file.
The Info.plist part configuring the JRE to use looks like:

I voluntary inserted spaces into xml tags to force display into the Forum.

Note that this path is relative to SystemWorkbench.app/Contents/MacOS/, hence make sure that this is valid on your side.

Hi Julien,
Thanks for trying to help, I really appreciate very much.
I did reinstall the whole thing again, but still the same error message -> cannot find JRE.
I do have High Sierra installed on my MacBook Pro.
If I go to the terminal and try to find the same path as in your mail, then it fails -> "cannot find path". To start, I cannot find from the terminal, the folder applications ( as it is called windows 7 Applications -> I have Parallels installed), and AC6 or SystemWorkbench is not amoung the items listed. If I search from Finder ( I can see AC6 -> systemworkbech), go then for "show package contents" then I can get no further than the folder "MacOs", in there, there is a file called jre (no folders ❗, and there it ends... So I cannot see the part of the path "jre/Contents/Home/lib/jli/libjli.dylib" anywhere. Maybe I'm too stupid for a Mac??? A previous installation under Sierra didn't work at first (same message). Then after a few months, I downloaded a new installer, and it did work straight from the box. Now it does not ???
Could this be High Sierra curse ??? Or is the installer not compatible with High Sierra???
Can someone help me ???

Hello,

Sorry for the delay I had to find a Mac running High Sierra.
Unfortunately I am not able to reproduce your issue, installation works as expected and the JRE is well available at the right location (under MacOS/jre/ folder).

Since MacOS/jre exists on your installation, but as a file, there is for sure an issue during the installation process.
Could you restart the installer in console mode (./install_sw4stm32_macos_64bits-v2.3.run -c) and attach the full log to this topic?

Then a workaround could be to manually copy the JRE by yourself, from the .jre folder (available in its directory while the installer is running) to SystemWorkbench.app/Content/MacOS/.

Hi,
I downloaded the installer again the latest.run, but this time I also downloaded the md5 signature, here is what I got:

MD5 (install_sw4stm32_macos_64bits-latest.run.md5) = aaf9b4bc935a47e6fc367417997bdd21
MD5 (install_sw4stm32_macos_64bits-latest.run) = 1db5de6ddd6e7458dcc6ad370121eff5

In my understanding, these two should match, do they? That's the purpose of the md5 sum .... no ???
In my perception, it's already screwed up, even before any attempt to install...
Can someone correct me, if I'm wrong?

I'm to blame, trying to read the contents of "install_sw4stm32_macos_64bits-latest.run.md5" file, revealed that, indeed both md5 sums are equal. However it still didn't help for the installation. And I cannot find the, log information (level INFO ???) in "console" (I'm not a real nerd ....... ). However here follows a copy op the terminal actions, as most access to the normal JRE places are prohibitive (don't know why):

Hi fram,

The bundled JRE failed to be extracted from the installer because its temporary location (/Users//Downloads/.jre) already exists, and could not be removed due to insufficient permissions.

Please check that your Download folder is clean of any .jre or jre1.8.0_131 folders before trying again.

About permissions, open Terminal.app and check the following basic Unix:

Copy to clipboard

$ cd /Users/<your_home_folder>/Downloads/
$ ls -ld .jre
drwxr-xr-x 6 <uid> <gid> [...] .jre
$ ls -ld jre1.8.0_131.jre
drwxr-xr-x 6 <uid> <gid> [...] jre1.8.0_131.jre

In normal behaviors such folders should not exist, so above commands may return "No such file or directory".
Otherwise you have to delete them either using Finder or the Terminal commands :

$rm -rf .jre
$rm -rf jre1.8.0_131.jre

Note: it works only if you are logged with the owner of the folder, i.e the flag of above command output, or if your are Administrator by prefixing the rm commands with "sudo" (sudo rm -rf ).

I too am having trouble installing on OS X.
High Sierra, 10.13.3

It gets this far then stops (command line install)

Looking this topic I did a test on a Macbook running High Sierra (10.13.3) too, everything works like a charm with latest SW version.

Note that the installer expands the JRE next to it, within a jre1.8.0_151.jre/ folder, renamed later to .jre/
Hence make sure before launching the installer that you have enough space on the disk, and that above directories do not exist at the installer location.

About the "sed" error, could you check when the error happened if :
- SystemWorkbench.app/Content/Info.plist exists ?
- JRE is succesfully copied in SystemWorkbench.app/Content/MacOS/jre ?

For community sharing; the issue is related to the fact that homebrew is installed.

It contributes a sed version with unexcepted behavior using -i option.

To fix your installation you need to make sure that you are using the /usr/bin/sed :

$ which sed
/usr/bin/sed

Was seeing the 'sed' issue on Mac OS X Sierra (10.12.6). Had homebrew installed so:

% which sed
/usr/local/bin/sed

The simple fix was to temporarily move homebrew sed out of the way:

% cd /usr/local/bin
% mv sed sed0

Now sed reports using the stock one:

% which sed
/usr/bin/sed

Ran the installer. This time it ran to completion. Then renamed sed back to where it was:

% cd /usr/local/bin
% mv sed0 sed
